INFLUENCE OF PURIFICATION ON GLASS FORMABILITY AND THERMOSTABILITY OF METALLIC GLASS Ni_(75)B_(17)Si_8

The glass formability of Ni_(75)B_(17)Si_8 melt and the thermostability of this metallic glass formed from the the melt can be enhanced by eliminating the heterogeneous catalystg. The purification was done by cyclical superheating melt in special glasses and subsequently cyclically superheating it in an electromagnetic levitation apparatus. The purified Ni_(75)B_(17)Si_8 amorphous sample sized up to 20 ~ I0 x 0.5 mm was prepared as four times the thickness of unpurified ones.

The synthesis and magnetic properties of Pr xCe 1 x Fe 2 have been investigated. The forma tion of Pr xCe 1 x Fe 2 is found to depend strongly on annealing temperature. Pure single phase compound can be synthesized at ambient pressure when x≤0 5. The main phase of the Laves structure can still be observed up to x=0 8. Magnetostriction increases with in creasing x and a largest saturation magnetostriction 200 ppm is observed for x=0.5.

The structure and magnetostriction of R(Fe_(1-x)Al_x)_y alloys(R=Dy_(0.65)Tb_(0.25)Pr_(0.1),x≤0.3,y=1.8 and 2) have been investigated using metallography, X-ray diffraction, electron probe micro- analysis(EPMA) and standard strain gauge techniques.It was found that the matrix of R(Fe_(1-x)Al_x)_2 alloys is cubic Laves phase(Dy,Tb,Pr)(Fe,Al)_2 and the second phase is PuNi3-type (Dy,Tb,Pr)(Fe,Al)_3 when x<0.15.The R(Fe_(1-x)Al_x)_(1.8) alloys contain trace of rare earth-rich phase.The magnetostriction of R(Fe_(1-x)Al_x)_y alloys decreases with increasing x in high magnetic fields; however, it exhibits a peak when x = 0.05 in low magnetic fields(H≤ 160 kA / m).The magnetostriction of R(Fe_(1-x)Al_x)_(1.8) alloys is higher than that of R(Fe_(1-x)Al_x)_2 alloys when x<0.15.

The microstructures of the grain boundary phases in Fe-Ni-Co-Nb-Ti superalloy have been studied by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM).Besides the Laves phase,three other grain boundary phases have been found and analyzed. The ε phase particles are needle-like with some stacking faults along the(0001) direction. The dominant phase at the grain boundaries is the orthorhombic phase that is also rod-like. High reselution image also confirms the existence of the triclinic phase at the grain boundaries that is irregular and scarce.

ATIGUE CRACK GROWTH FEATURE OF Fe-Cr-Ni MATRIX COMPOSITE REINFORCED BY TITANIUM CARBIDE PARTICULATE AT 1023K

The initiation and propagation of the short fatigue crack in a 10vol% titanium carbide particulate reichreed cast Fe-26Cr-14Ni mathe coopsite at 1023K were investigated.It is shown that the titanium carbide particulate may hinder the crack propagation and fatigue fracture of the composite. The relationships between fatigue crack propagation rate and stress intensity factor are da/dN=4.2×10-c(△K)4 for the matrix alloy and da/dN=1.4×10-19(△K)c for the composite. The fatigue thresholds of the composite and mathe alloy are 78 and 3.2MPa.m1/2, respectively. Microcracks initiate at the intedece between titanium carbide particulate and austenite and then propagate in carkide particles. The fracture sudece of the composite shows a distinct transition from wavy and serated cleavage near the threshold regime to striation-type splitting in the stable fatigue crack propagation stage and to a veined morphology characteristic in unstable rapid region.

The mechanical properties of a type of Al-alloy weld including strength, fracture tough-ness and ductility were comprehensively studied at different temperatures. The frac-ture behavior and weld micro features were also characterized. The surface crack test method was adopted to study the fracture toughness and a multiple specimen test ap-paratus was designed to perform the cryogenic experiments. The relationship between the mechanical properties and temperature was obtained together with the fracture toughness distribution in the weld.

MECHANISM OF EXTRACTION AND STRIPPING OF Fe(Ⅲ) WITH PRIMARY AMINE N1923 AS EXTRACTANT AND n-OCTANE AS DILUENT

Mechanism of extraction of Fe (III) from sulphate solution by primary amine N1923 and stripping of Fe loaded organic phase with dilute H_2SO_4 was investigated. The organic phase was characterized by FT-IR and photon correlation spectroscopy. The composition of extracted species as well as the content of H_2O in organic phase were determined. The dependence of both the rate of extraction and stripping on the formation of reverse micelle in primary amine (N1923)system has been confirmed. It is shown that the extraction of Fe(III) by primary amine sulphate may be related to the adduct formation or cation exchange reaction under different concentrations of H_2SO_4 in aqueous solution.

An accurate and simple model of stacking fault energy for alloys (solid solutions) has beendeveloped based on the embedded-atom method. The calculated value of stacking fault energy35 mJ/m2 for 304 austenitic stainless steel, is in a good agreement with the experimental one,30 mJ/m2. In the present model we find that the Hirth's empirical relationship is also suitablefor alloy.
